Our Story

More young people than ever before are moving in and out of Australia for work, study, cultural experiences, or to spend time with friends and family. Many see living abroad as a way to gain new skills, explore opportunities, or take a break from the traditional life path. But what happens in the long term to careers, social and family lives, and a sense of belonging when young people move between countries, decide whether to stay, return, or settle, and navigate the transition into adulthood?

Youth Futures After Mobility (YFAM), funded by the Australian Research Council, builds on the Youth Mobilities and Pathways (YMAP) project to explore these questions. The project follows 800 young people over 10 years, using surveys and interviews to understand what helps and hinders their social and economic integration after living abroad.

Led by Distinguished Professor Anita Harris (Deakin University) and Professor Loretta Baldassar (Edith Cowan University), YFAM will provide insights to help young Australians returning from overseas and talented migrant youth settle, thrive, and contribute to society.
